PCD full form is Propaganda cum Distribution. In the Indian pharmaceutical industry, PCD is a franchise arrangement: a pharma company grants a person or a firm the right to promote and distribute its products under the company's own brand name, usually within an agreed territory.
"Propaganda" here means promotion — calling on doctors and chemists to build prescriptions. It does not mean misinformation. "Distribution" means supplying the product to those chemists and stockists. A PCD partner does both jobs, in one territory, under one company's brand names. That is the whole model.
Franchising means a company authorises another party to sell its products under its brand name. The franchise partner works to the parent company's brand, pricing and code of practice. In pharma, that arrangement is what PCD describes.
The model grew because it lets a company reach territories it could never staff directly, and it lets a person with existing medical-field relationships start selling without building a factory. The PCD business is being emulated by thousands of people across the Indian pharma industry.
Pharma companies appoint individuals, professionals, distributors or small firms as franchise partners, giving them a limited right to sell the company's branded products in a named territory. The company keeps ownership of its trademarks and products. The entity granted that right is commonly called a pharma franchise, or a PCD (Propaganda cum Distribution) franchise.
To start a PCD Pharma Franchise, you will be relying on your own work, your networks and your relationships with doctors and professionals in the medical industry. The company supplies the products and the marketing inputs. The doctor calls, the chemist visits and the orders are yours.
Two things are worth knowing before you start, and most companies in this category will not put them in writing.
Neither of these makes the model bad. They make it a sales business with stock attached, not passive income. Ask any company you are evaluating how it handles both, before you place a first order — including us.
If you are still drawing up a shortlist, we maintain a comparison of PCD pharma companies in India, with the source for every fact in it.

In Indian pharma the two terms are used interchangeably for the same arrangement. PCD names the two jobs the partner actually does — propaganda, meaning promotion to doctors, and distribution, meaning supply to chemists. Pharma franchise names the licensing relationship that permits it. There is no standard definition separating them.
The main benefits are low investment capital, low administrative costs, and monopoly rights over an agreed territory. You sell an established company's ready-made, approved product range instead of funding your own manufacturing, registration and brand building, and the marketing material comes from the company. That is why the model is popular.
Two are worth knowing before you start. You are restricted to one supplier: your company's range, its stock position and its quality become yours, and you cannot freely source an alternative. And you carry external risk from other franchisees — you are selling a brand whose reputation other partners in the network also affect.
