Third-party manufacturing is how most pharmaceutical brands in India are actually made. You own the brand, the formulation and the market. What is third-party manufacturing in pharma?

Third-party manufacturing — also called contract manufacturing or loan licensing — is an arrangement where a pharmaceutical marketing company gets its products manufactured by a licensed manufacturing unit that it does not own. The medicine is made at the manufacturer's plant, under the manufacturer's drug licence, and packed under the marketing company's brand name.

The marketing company handles branding, promotion and distribution. The manufacturer handles production, quality control and regulatory compliance. Both names appear on the pack: the brand on the front, the manufacturing licence and site address on the back. That back panel is the part almost nobody reads, and it is the part that tells you the truth.

The third-party manufacturing process, step by step

1. Decide what you actually need made

Composition, strength, dosage form and packing. A manufacturer cannot quote until you have those four. If you do not have them yet, most manufacturers will help you choose from their existing approved formulations, which is faster and cheaper than developing something new.

2. Check the manufacturer is licensed for that dosage form

This is the step people skip, and it costs them. A WHO-GMP site certificate is issued to a specific plant and lists specific dosage forms. A plant certified for tablets, capsules, external preparations and oral liquids cannot legally make your injectable or your eye drop. Ask for the certificate and read the table on it before you discuss price.

3. Ask for the quotation

Rates depend on composition, order quantity, packing and whether you supply the packing material. Expect a per-unit rate against a minimum batch size. There is no such thing as a meaningful quote without a minimum order quantity attached to it.

4. Send your documents

You will need your drug licence, GST registration, and trademark registration or the application receipt for your brand name. Without a trademark filing, a manufacturer cannot safely print your brand on a pack.

5. Sign the manufacturing agreement

It should state the composition, rate, batch size, delivery timeline, packing specification and who is liable for what. Read the clause on rejected or damaged material before you sign it, not after.

6. Artwork approval

You approve the carton, foil and label artwork. The manufacturer checks it carries the mandatory declarations — licence number, batch, manufacturing and expiry dates, MRP, storage conditions. This is where most delays happen. Approve artwork quickly.

7. Production and quality control

The batch is manufactured, then tested. Every batch gets a batch manufacturing record and a certificate of analysis. Ask for both. A manufacturer who hesitates over a COA is telling you something.

8. Dispatch

Goods are released against your payment, invoiced, and dispatched with the batch documents. Typical timelines run four to six weeks from confirmed order, longer if the artwork or the API takes time.

What to check before choosing a third-party manufacturer

• The site certificate, and which dosage forms it lists. Not "we have WHO-GMP facilities" — the certificate, with the address and the dosage-form table on it.
• Whether the plant is theirs. Many companies offering third-party manufacturing are themselves outsourcing it. Ask whose licence your product will be made under.
• Who else that plant makes for. A plant manufacturing for other pharmaceutical companies is audited by all of them. That is a harder inspection than you will ever run.
• Minimum order quantity. Ask early. It decides whether this is viable for you at all.
• Documentation. Batch manufacturing record and certificate of analysis with every batch, as standard, not on request.
• Capacity and timelines in writing. A verbal four weeks is not four weeks.
