About the product

By Vibcare Pharma · Updated 9 October 2026 · Based on product labels and standard drug references

Description

Amivib 500 Injection is an injection that contains Amikacin 500 mg, an antibiotic belonging to the aminoglycoside group. It is made by Vibcare Pharma and is packed as 1's. The injection comes from Vibcare Pharma's Prima division.

How it works

Amikacin in this injection attaches itself to the bacteria's ribosome and stops the bacteria from making new protein. Without protein, susceptible bacteria cannot grow or survive and are killed. The antibiotic acts against a range of Gram-negative bacteria.

Used for

This injection is used for the short-term treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible Gram-negative bacteria, such as blood infection (sepsis), serious infections of the respiratory tract, bones, joints, skin and soft tissue, the central nervous system, the abdomen, burns and post-operative infections, and serious complicated and recurrent urinary tract infections. Aminoglycosides can cause permanent hearing loss and kidney damage, so the patient needs close clinical observation during treatment.

Given only by a doctor or nurse.

Side Effects

Common

  • High frequency hearing difficulty or ringing in the ears (usually the first sign of ear nerve damage)
  • Dizziness (vertigo) or loss of balance
  • Rise in serum creatinine on blood testing
  • Albuminuria and red or white cells and casts in the urine
  • Reduced urine output (oliguria), azotaemia

Get medical help at once if you notice

  • Permanent hearing loss or permanent bilateral auditory damage (ototoxicity)
  • Kidney damage (toxic nephropathy) or acute renal failure
  • Sudden muscle paralysis or difficulty in breathing after the injection (neuromuscular blockade and apnea)

Uses

  • Short-term treatment of serious infections due to susceptible Gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas, E. coli, Proteus, Providencia, Klebsiella-Enterobacter-Serratia, Acinetobacter)
  • Bacterial septicemia (blood infection), including neonatal sepsis
  • Serious infections of the respiratory tract, bones and joints, skin and soft tissue
  • Infections of the central nervous system, including meningitis
  • Intra-abdominal infections, including peritonitis
  • Burns and post-operative infections
  • Serious complicated and recurrent urinary tract infections caused by these organisms

Precautions

Do not use

  • Must not be used by anyone with a history of allergy (hypersensitivity) to amikacin
  • Must not be used by anyone with a history of allergy or serious toxic reaction to any aminoglycoside antibiotic, because of known cross-sensitivity within the class

Ask a doctor first

  • Check with a doctor first if you are pregnant: aminoglycosides cross the placenta and can harm the fetus, and irreversible bilateral deafness has been reported in newborns, so use in pregnancy needs an explicit risk-benefit decision by the doctor
  • Check with a doctor first if you have kidney damage, hearing problems or balance problems: the risk of ear and kidney damage is greater in these patients and treatment needs close clinical observation
  • Check with a doctor first if you are sensitive to sulfites: this injection may contain sodium metabisulfite, which can cause allergic-type reactions including anaphylactic symptoms and severe asthmatic episodes; sulfite-sensitive people should avoid exposure
