About the product

By Vibcare Pharma · Updated 9 October 2026 · Based on product labels and standard drug references

Description

Vibonate 120 is an injection from Vibcare Pharma's Genvimax division, packed as 1's. Each pack provides artesunate 120 mg together with sodium bicarbonate 5% and sodium chloride 0.9 w/v. It belongs to the antimalarial class of medicines and is meant to be given in a hospital under medical supervision.

How it works

Artesunate acts on the malaria parasite while it is inside the red blood cells, so the infection is brought under control. Sodium bicarbonate solution helps to dissolve the artesunate powder before use, and sodium chloride 0.9 w/v is used to dilute the dissolved medicine so that it can be given as an injection.

Used for

Vibonate 120 is used for the treatment of severe malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum.

Given only by a doctor or nurse.

Get medical help at once if you notice

  • Severe delayed haemolysis with anaemia

Uses

  • Treatment of severe malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum
  • Used in hospitals when the patient cannot take malaria medicines by mouth
  • Used as the starting treatment for severe malaria before follow-up medicines are given
  • Used for severe malaria in adults and children, including in pregnancy, under medical supervision

Precautions

Do not use

  • Must not be used in anyone who is allergic to artesunate, any artemisinin medicine or any ingredient of this injection
  • Must not be used in patients who are losing chloride by vomiting or from continuous gastrointestinal suction, as the injection contains sodium bicarbonate
  • Must not be used in patients receiving diuretics known to produce a hypochloremic alkalosis

Ask a doctor first

  • Check with a doctor first: sodium-containing solutions must be used with great care, if at all, in patients with congestive heart failure, severe renal insufficiency or oedema with sodium retention, since sodium may be retained and intravenous fluid can overload the circulation and cause pulmonary oedema; liver disease also needs medical review first
  • Check with a doctor first if the patient is pregnant or breastfeeding
