Description
Cream combining betamethasone dipropionate 0.05% w/w, a potent corticosteroid, with gentamicin sulphate 0.1% w/w, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, and zinc sulphate monohydrate 0.5% w/w, with chlorocresol 0.1% as preservative. Betamethasone reduces inflammation, redness and itching. Gentamicin kills Gram-negative and staphylococcal bacteria that secondarily infect inflamed skin. Zinc sulphate has a mild astringent and antiseptic action and helps dry oozing skin. Together they are used for steroid-responsive skin conditions with bacterial infection, especially when the lesions are weeping. Applied as a thin layer to the affected skin for a short course. For short courses, usually not more than 1–2 weeks.
Side Effects
Burning, stinging, itching or dryness at the site; contact allergy to gentamicin is uncommon., With prolonged or repeated use the potent steroid can cause skin thinning, stretch marks, acne-like eruptions, loss of colour and spread of untreated fungal infection, and gentamicin use can select resistant bacteria., Use over large areas or under occlusion increases steroid and gentamicin absorption., Not for use on fungal or viral skin infections, in rosacea, acne or perioral dermatitis, on the face for long periods, or in known allergy to aminoglycosides or any ingredient.
Indication
Steroid-responsive dermatoses with secondary bacterial infection for short-term use: infected eczema and dermatitis, including weeping lesions , Infected insect-bite reactions , Impetiginised dermatoses
