Description

Clindamycin phosphate 1% gel for acne. Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that blocks bacterial protein synthesis. Applied to the skin, it reduces Cutibacterium acnes in the hair follicle and reduces the free fatty acids and inflammatory signals these bacteria produce, which lowers the number of red papules and pustules. Acne guidelines advise that a topical antibiotic is used together with benzoyl peroxide or a topical retinoid to limit bacterial resistance, which is reported at high levels for clindamycin in Indian acne patients. A thin layer is applied to clean, dry skin over the affected area, avoiding eyes, mouth and broken skin.

Side Effects

Dryness, peeling, burning, stinging, redness or itching where applied; oily skin., Less common: contact dermatitis, Gram-negative folliculitis with long use., Rarely, clindamycin absorbed through the skin has been linked to diarrhoea and antibiotic-associated (pseudomembranous) colitis; treatment should be stopped if severe or persistent diarrhoea occurs., Use with erythromycin products on the same area should be avoided., Not for use in patients with a history of antibiotic-associated colitis, ulcerative colitis or regional enteritis, or with allergy to clindamycin or lincomycin.
