About the product

By Vibcare Pharma · Updated 9 October 2026 · Based on product labels and standard drug references

Description

Febuvib 40 tablets contain Febuxostat 40 mg. They belong to the xanthine oxidase inhibitor class of anti-gout medicines and are packed as 10x15 (Alu Alu). The product comes from Vibcare Pharma's Prima division.

How it works

Febuxostat works by blocking the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which the body uses to make uric acid. With less uric acid being formed, the level of uric acid in the blood falls and the deposits that trigger gout are less likely to build up over time.

Used for

These tablets are used for the long-term management of high uric acid in adults with gout who get an inadequate response to a maximally titrated dose of allopurinol, cannot tolerate it or for whom it is not advisable. In gout patients with established heart or blood vessel disease, a higher rate of cardiovascular death was seen, so risks and benefits must be weighed. If liver injury or a serious skin reaction appears, treatment must be stopped promptly and a doctor contacted.

Use only on a doctor's prescription, at the dose and for the duration advised.

Side Effects

Common

  • Abnormal liver function test results
  • Nausea
  • Joint pain (arthralgia)
  • Skin rash
  • Gout flares, which are often seen when treatment is first started

Get medical help at once if you notice

  • Liver failure has been reported in some cases, some of them fatal
  • Serious skin and hypersensitivity reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, DRESS and toxic epidermal necrolysis
  • Cardiovascular death, seen at a higher rate in gout patients with established cardiovascular disease

Uses

  • Long-term management of raised uric acid levels (hyperuricemia) in adults with gout
  • For gout patients who get an inadequate response to a maximally titrated dose of allopurinol
  • For gout patients who are intolerant to allopurinol
  • For gout patients for whom treatment with allopurinol is not advisable

Precautions

Do not use

  • Must not be used by patients being treated with azathioprine or mercaptopurine

Ask a doctor first

  • Check with a doctor first if you have established cardiovascular disease such as heart attack, stroke or heart failure, as a higher rate of cardiovascular death was seen in these patients and the doctor should weigh the risks and benefits
  • Check with a doctor first if you have high uric acid with no gout symptoms (asymptomatic hyperuricemia), as febuxostat is not recommended for this
  • Check with a doctor first if you have liver problems; if signs of liver injury appear during treatment, treatment must be interrupted promptly and a doctor should be contacted for assessment, and febuxostat stopped if liver injury is confirmed
  • Check with a doctor first if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding
