Sertraline works by blocking the reuptake of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a chemical messenger that carries signals between nerve cells and has a part in mood and emotions. This medicine is used in the treatment of major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. All patients on this medicine should be closely monitored for clinical worsening and for the emergence of suicidal thoughts or behaviour, especially children, adolescents and young adults.
