Belongs to a class of drugs “diuretics” that control high blood pressure and swelling by removing the extra water and electrolytes from the body. The most effective blood pressure-lowering treatment for patients with resistant hypertension. (Bryan Williams, 2015) Promotes a rapid and marked excretion of water, sodium, and chloride. (H A Friedel, 1991) Effective for the treatment of edema associated with heart failure, renal disease, and liver disease. (M Young, 2001) Produces more prolonged water and electrolyte excretion than furosemide. Lessens symptoms such as shortness of breath and swelling in the arms, legs, and abdomen. A useful alternative to furosemide provides potent and long-lasting diuresis in chronic congestive heart failure, renal disease, and hepatic cirrhosis patients.
