Description

A tablet form of Esomeprazole 40mg, Esovib 40 is supplied by Vibcare Pharma's Prima division. It is grouped with the anti-ulcerant medicines as a proton pump inhibitor, and the tablets come packed as 10x15 (Alu Alu).

How it works

Inside the stomach, esomeprazole stops the acid pump, the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme on the surface of parietal cells, from releasing acid. This blocks the last step of acid formation, so acid output falls whether it is the usual level or the rise that follows food or other stimulation. Lower stomach acid gives the inflamed lining of the food pipe and stomach a chance to settle, which brings relief from heartburn and supports healing of the damaged area.

Used for

The tablets are used for the short-term healing of erosive esophagitis, for relief of heartburn and other symptoms linked with GERD, and for maintaining that healing in adults. They are also used to lower the chance of NSAID-related gastric ulcers in adults at risk, as part of combination therapy to eradicate H. pylori and reduce duodenal ulcer recurrence, and for long-term management of pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Use only on a doctor's prescription, at the dose and for the duration advised.

  • Maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis in adults

  • Risk reduction of NSAID-associated gastric ulcer in adults at risk, such as those aged 60 years or older or with a documented history of gastric ulcers
  • Helicobacter pylori eradication, in combination with amoxicillin and clarithromycin, to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence

Precautions

Do not use

  • Must not be used by patients with known allergy (hypersensitivity) to substituted benzimidazoles or to any component of the tablet; reactions may include anaphylaxis, angioedema, bronchospasm and urticaria
  • Must not be used by patients taking rilpivirine-containing products

Ask a doctor first

  • Check with a doctor first if you are taking clopidogrel; concomitant use with esomeprazole should be avoided
  • Check with a doctor first if treatment is needed for a long time (risk of bone fractures of hip, wrist or spine, vitamin B12 deficiency and low magnesium with daily long-term use)
  • Check with a doctor first if symptoms do not improve, since symptom response does not rule out a stomach malignancy
