Metalab SR 1000 tablets contain Metformin 1000 mg and are used with diet and exercise to improve sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Main uses: used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus; helps lower raised fasting and after-meal blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes; used on its own or added to other blood sugar lowering medicines when sugar is not controlled by diet and exercise alone.

Common side effects of Metalab SR 1000 Tablet include diarrhoea; nausea or vomiting; stomach pain or cramps; flatulence (gas); loss of appetite; indigestion or heartburn. Get medical help at once if you notice lactic acidosis (a build-up of lactic acid in the blood, with symptoms such as weakness, muscle pain, trouble breathing, sleepiness and stomach pain); low blood sugar when taken with insulin or other blood sugar lowering tablets; serious allergic reactions such as swelling of the face or lips (angioedema) or anaphylaxis.

Each Metalab SR 1000 tablet contains Metformin 1000 mg. The right dose and how long to take it depend on the condition, age and other medicines, so use Metalab SR 1000 Tablet only as your doctor advises.

Metformin works mainly by cutting down the amount of sugar the liver releases into the blood and by helping the body's own insulin move sugar into muscle and other tissues. It does not push the pancreas to make extra insulin, so on its own it does not usually drop sugar to very low levels. In this way it keeps blood sugar closer to normal through the day.

Must not be used by people with severe kidney impairment (eGFR below 30 mL/min/1.73 m2). Must not be used in metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis. Must not be used by anyone with a history of a serious allergic reaction to metformin. Not recommended for type 1 diabetes mellitus. Check with a doctor first if you have reduced kidney or liver function, drink alcohol heavily, are aged 65 or above, are going for a scan or procedure that uses contrast dye, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
