Description

Jemvorm is an oral syrup from Vibcare Pharma's Auspin division. The active ingredient is Ondansetron 2 mg. The medicine belongs to the 5-HT3 receptor antagonist class of antiemetics. It is packed as 30ml.

How it works

The way Jemvorm acts is by blocking serotonin 5-HT3 receptors, which are present on the vagal nerve terminals of the gut and in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the brain. Serotonin released from the intestine during cancer treatment may stimulate these receptors and set off the vomiting reflex. By holding these receptors closed, the syrup helps keep the reflex from starting. The action may be central, peripheral, or both.

Used for

Use of Jemvorm is for the prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with highly emetogenic and moderately emetogenic chemotherapy, with radiotherapy such as total body irradiation or abdominal fractions, and for the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting. Watch for signs of myocardial ischaemia and of a slowing bowel or gastric distension.

Use only on a doctor's prescription, at the dose and for the duration advised.

Precautions

Do not use

  • Must not be used if you are allergic to ondansetron or any part of the syrup
  • Must not be used together with apomorphine, as this can cause a severe drop in blood pressure and loss of consciousness

Ask a doctor first

  • Ondansetron should be avoided in patients with congenital long QT syndrome
  • Check with a doctor first if you have electrolyte abnormalities, cardiac failure or arrhythmias, or if you are taking other QT-prolonging or serotonergic medicines; ECG monitoring may be needed
  • Check with a doctor first after abdominal surgery or if bowel movements have slowed, as ondansetron may hide a progressing ileus or gastric distension
