Description

Vomivib Syrup is an oral syrup made by Vibcare Pharma. It carries Ondansetron 2 mg as its active ingredient. It falls in the class of antiemetic medicines called 5-HT3 receptor antagonists. The syrup is packed as 30ml, and it comes from Vibcare Pharma's Prima division.

How it works

Ondansetron works by blocking serotonin 5-HT3 receptors found on the vagal nerve endings of the gut and in the vomiting centre of the brain. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can release serotonin from the small intestine, which then signals the nerves to start the vomiting reflex. By blocking these receptors, ondansetron helps stop that signal before nausea and vomiting begin. It does not act on dopamine receptors.

Used for

Vomivib Syrup is used to prevent nausea and vomiting linked with highly and moderately emetogenic cancer chemotherapy, with radiotherapy to the abdomen or the whole body, and with an operation. Watch for chest pain and for slowed bowel activity or stomach swelling.

Use only on a doctor's prescription, at the dose and for the duration advised.

Uses

Precautions

Do not use

  • Must not be used if you are allergic to ondansetron or any part of the syrup
  • Must not be used together with apomorphine, as this can cause a severe drop in blood pressure and loss of consciousness

Ask a doctor first

  • Ondansetron should be avoided in patients with congenital long QT syndrome
  • Check with a doctor first if you have electrolyte abnormalities, cardiac failure or arrhythmias, or if you are taking other QT-prolonging or serotonergic medicines; ECG monitoring may be needed
  • Check with a doctor first after abdominal surgery or if bowel movements have slowed, as ondansetron may hide a progressing ileus or gastric distension
