Description

Vomivib MD 4 is an oral tablet that contains Ondansetron 4 mg as its active ingredient. It belongs to the class of medicines called 5-HT3 receptor antagonist anti-emetics. The product is packed as 10x10 (Alu Alu) and is from Vibcare Pharma's Prima division.

How it works

Ondansetron blocks 5-HT3 serotonin receptors on vagal nerve terminals in the gut and in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the brain. Cytotoxic chemotherapy can release serotonin from the small intestine, and this serotonin starts the vomiting reflex. By blocking the receptors, the tablet helps keep that signal from being passed on; it does not act on dopamine receptors.

Used for

It is used to prevent nausea and vomiting from highly emetogenic cancer chemotherapy (including cisplatin at 50 mg/m2 or above), moderately emetogenic cancer chemotherapy, radiotherapy to the abdomen or total body irradiation, and surgery. The tablet can mask progressive ileus or gastric distension, so bowel activity should be monitored, especially after abdominal surgery.

Use only on a doctor's prescription, at the dose and for the duration advised.

Side Effects

Common

  • Headache
  • Malaise or fatigue

  • Masking of progressive ileus and/or gastric distension; bowel activity should be monitored, especially after abdominal surgery or with chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting

Uses

  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with radiotherapy, including total body irradiation, a single high-dose fraction to the abdomen, or daily fractions to the abdomen

Precautions

Do not use

  • Must not be used by patients known to have hypersensitivity (e.g. anaphylaxis) to ondansetron or any component of the formulation
  • Must not be used together with apomorphine, because of the risk of a profound drop in blood pressure and loss of consciousness

Ask a doctor first

  • Should be avoided in patients with congenital long QT syndrome
  • Check with a doctor first if there are electrolyte abnormalities, cardiac failure or arrhythmias, or use of other QT-prolonging medicines; ECG monitoring is advised in these situations
