Description

Ondanor MD 4 is a tablet formulation that contains Ondansetron 4 mg. It is a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist anti-emetic. The product is packed as 10x10 (Alu Alu) and is marketed from Vibcare Pharma's Medanor division.

How it works

The ingredient works by selectively blocking 5-HT3 serotonin receptors located on vagal nerve terminals and in the chemoreceptor trigger zone. Cytotoxic chemotherapy appears to cause the release of serotonin from the gut, and that serotonin can initiate the vomiting reflex. Blocking its action at these receptors helps prevent nausea and vomiting.

Used for

This tablet is indicated to prevent nausea and vomiting linked with highly emetogenic cancer chemotherapy, including cisplatin at 50 mg/m2 or above, with moderately emetogenic chemotherapy, with radiotherapy such as total body irradiation or abdominal fractions, and with the postoperative state. It can mask progressive ileus or gastric distension, so bowel activity should be monitored, particularly after abdominal surgery.

Use only on a doctor's prescription, at the dose and for the duration advised.

Side Effects

Common

  • Headache
  • Malaise or fatigue
  • Constipation

  • Masking of progressive ileus and/or gastric distension; bowel activity should be monitored, especially after abdominal surgery or with chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting

Uses

Precautions

  • Must not be used by patients known to have hypersensitivity (e.g. anaphylaxis) to ondansetron or any component of the formulation

Ask a doctor first

  • Should be avoided in patients with congenital long QT syndrome
