Description

Available from Vibcare Pharma's Evermed division, Vomiver Syrup is a liquid antiemetic preparation. It contains Ondansetron 2 mg as the active substance. Its class is 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. Vomiver Syrup is packed as 30ml.

How it works

Inside the body, ondansetron sits on serotonin 5-HT3 receptors located both on the vagal nerve endings in the intestine and in the brain's vomiting centre. When cancer treatment releases serotonin from the gut, those receptors would normally pass a signal to trigger vomiting. The syrup blocks this step, which helps hold back the vomiting reflex before it begins. It does not work through dopamine receptors.

Used for

Vomiver Syrup is given to prevent nausea and vomiting that come with highly emetogenic or moderately emetogenic chemotherapy, with radiotherapy including total body irradiation or abdominal fractions, and after surgery. Report chest pain, and note reduced bowel activity or stomach distension after abdominal surgery.

Use only on a doctor's prescription, at the dose and for the duration advised.

Uses

  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with highly emetogenic cancer chemotherapy
  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with initial and repeat courses of moderately emetogenic cancer chemotherapy
  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with radiotherapy, including total body irradiation, single high-dose fraction to the abdomen, or daily fractions to the abdomen
  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting after an operation (postoperative)

Precautions

Do not use

  • Must not be used if you are allergic to ondansetron or any part of the syrup
  • Must not be used together with apomorphine, as this can cause a severe drop in blood pressure and loss of consciousness

Ask a doctor first

  • Ondansetron should be avoided in patients with congenital long QT syndrome
  • Check with a doctor first if you have electrolyte abnormalities, cardiac failure or arrhythmias, or if you are taking other QT-prolonging or serotonergic medicines; ECG monitoring may be needed
  • Check with a doctor first after abdominal surgery or if bowel movements have slowed, as ondansetron may hide a progressing ileus or gastric distension
