Description

Vomiver MD 4 is an oral tablet made by Vibcare Pharma, and each tablet carries Ondansetron 4 mg. It falls in the 5-HT3 receptor antagonist group of anti-emetic medicines. The tablet comes packed as 10x10 (Alu Alu) and is supplied from the Evermed division.

How it works

As a selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, ondansetron blocks serotonin receptors both at the vagal nerve endings and in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the area postrema. Serotonin released from the small intestine during cytotoxic chemotherapy is believed to activate these receptors and set off the vomiting reflex, and receptor blockade helps interrupt that pathway.

Used for

Its indication is the prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with highly emetogenic cancer chemotherapy, including cisplatin at doses of 50 mg/m2 or above, with initial and repeat courses of moderately emetogenic chemotherapy, with radiotherapy to the abdomen or total body irradiation, and with the postoperative period. Because it may mask progressive ileus or gastric distension, bowel activity should be monitored, especially after abdominal surgery.

Use only on a doctor's prescription, at the dose and for the duration advised.

Side Effects

Common

  • Headache
  • Malaise or fatigue

  • Serotonin syndrome, mainly with concomitant serotonergic drugs
  • Masking of progressive ileus and/or gastric distension; bowel activity should be monitored, especially after abdominal surgery or with chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting

Uses

  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with highly emetogenic cancer chemotherapy, including cisplatin at 50 mg/m2 or above
  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with initial and repeat courses of moderately emetogenic cancer chemotherapy
  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with radiotherapy, including total body irradiation, a single high-dose fraction to the abdomen, or daily fractions to the abdomen
  • Prevention of postoperative nausea and/or vomiting

Precautions

Do not use

  • Must not be used by patients known to have hypersensitivity (e.g. anaphylaxis) to ondansetron or any component of the formulation
  • Must not be used together with apomorphine, because of the risk of a profound drop in blood pressure and loss of consciousness

Ask a doctor first

  • Should be avoided in patients with congenital long QT syndrome
  • Check with a doctor first if there are electrolyte abnormalities, cardiac failure or arrhythmias, or use of other QT-prolonging medicines; ECG monitoring is advised in these situations
  • Check with a doctor first if the patient is taking serotonergic medicines
