Description

Containing Ondansetron 4 mg, Vomijem MD 4 is a tablet for oral use. The medicine is classed as a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist anti-emetic. Vibcare Pharma supplies it in a 10x10 (Alu Alu) pack under the Auspin division.

How it works

The active ingredient acts on serotonin (5-HT3) receptors found peripherally on vagal nerve terminals and centrally in the area postrema. When cytotoxic chemotherapy causes enterochromaffin cells of the intestine to release serotonin, the released serotonin can stimulate these receptors and trigger vomiting. Ondansetron blocks the receptors so the vomiting reflex is not started.

Used for

Doctors use it to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by highly emetogenic chemotherapy such as cisplatin at 50 mg/m2 or more, by moderately emetogenic chemotherapy courses, by radiotherapy to the abdomen or total body, and after surgery. Since the tablet can mask progressive ileus or gastric distension, bowel activity should be monitored, particularly after abdominal surgery.

Use only on a doctor's prescription, at the dose and for the duration advised.

Side Effects

Common

  • Headache
  • Malaise or fatigue

  • Serotonin syndrome, mainly with concomitant serotonergic drugs
  • Masking of progressive ileus and/or gastric distension; bowel activity should be monitored, especially after abdominal surgery or with chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting

Uses

  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with highly emetogenic cancer chemotherapy, including cisplatin at 50 mg/m2 or above
  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with initial and repeat courses of moderately emetogenic cancer chemotherapy
  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with radiotherapy, including total body irradiation, a single high-dose fraction to the abdomen, or daily fractions to the abdomen
  • Prevention of postoperative nausea and/or vomiting

Precautions

Do not use

  • Must not be used by patients known to have hypersensitivity (e.g. anaphylaxis) to ondansetron or any component of the formulation
  • Must not be used together with apomorphine, because of the risk of a profound drop in blood pressure and loss of consciousness

Ask a doctor first

  • Should be avoided in patients with congenital long QT syndrome
  • Check with a doctor first if there are electrolyte abnormalities, cardiac failure or arrhythmias, or use of other QT-prolonging medicines; ECG monitoring is advised in these situations
