Description

Atovib CV 20 is a capsule made by Vibcare Pharma. Each capsule carries Atorvastatin 20 mg together with Clopidogrel 75 mg. Atorvastatin belongs to the statin class of medicines and clopidogrel belongs to the P2Y12 platelet inhibitor (antiplatelet) class. The brand is packed as 10x10 (Alu Alu).

How it works

This medicine works in two ways. Atorvastatin blocks the liver enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which the body uses to make cholesterol, so cholesterol production falls and more LDL cholesterol is removed from the blood. Clopidogrel acts on platelets by blocking their P2Y12 ADP receptors, which keeps them from clumping and forming a clot. Together, the two ingredients act on cholesterol and on clot formation at the same time.

Used for

Atovib CV 20 is used to lower LDL cholesterol in adults with primary hyperlipidaemia or other lipid problems as an addition to diet, when clopidogrel is also needed, and to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in adults with coronary heart disease who separately need clopidogrel. It is used after acute coronary syndrome and in patients with a recent heart attack, recent stroke or established peripheral arterial disease when the patient has an independent need for clopidogrel, with aspirin as advised. Omeprazole and esomeprazole should be avoided with this medicine, and clopidogrel may work less in patients with CYP2C19 poor metaboliser status.

Use only on a doctor's prescription, at the dose and for the duration advised.

Get medical help at once if you notice

  • Liver problems with yellowing of the skin or eyes or dark urine
  • Serious or prolonged bleeding, including bleeding inside the stomach or brain
  • Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP)

Uses

  • To lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) as an addition to diet in adults who also have an independent need for clopidogrel
  • To reduce the risk of heart attack (myocardial infarction) and stroke in adults with clinically evident coronary heart disease who also have an independent need for clopidogrel
  • In acute coronary syndrome (unstable angina or non-ST-elevation heart attack) to reduce the rate of heart attack and stroke, given along with aspirin as advised by the doctor
  • In ST-elevation heart attack managed medically to reduce the rate of heart attack and stroke, given along with aspirin as advised by the doctor
  • In patients with a recent heart attack, recent stroke or established peripheral arterial disease to reduce the rate of heart attack and stroke
  • As an addition to diet for primary dysbetalipoproteinaemia or hypertriglyceridaemia in adults who also have an independent need for clopidogrel

Precautions

Do not use

  • Must not be used in patients with acute liver failure or decompensated cirrhosis
  • Must not be used in patients with active pathological bleeding such as a bleeding peptic ulcer or bleeding inside the brain
  • Must not be used if there is a known allergy to atorvastatin, clopidogrel or any ingredient of the capsule

Ask a doctor first

  • Check with a doctor first if the patient has liver or kidney disease or an underactive thyroid
  • Check with a doctor first if the patient is pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, and before any surgery or dental procedure
  • Check with a doctor first in patients with two loss-of-function CYP2C19 alleles (CYP2C19 poor metabolisers), as clopidogrel forms less active metabolite and has a reduced effect on platelets in them; another P2Y12 inhibitor may need to be considered
  • Check with a doctor first if the patient takes omeprazole or esomeprazole, as these medicines reduce the antiplatelet activity of clopidogrel and should be avoided with it
